It is an all-too-common sight on the streets, in the forests, or even in the ocean. Scraps or waste left by careless and indifferent humans – leading to animals getting trapped. Cats especially are very flexible, which gives them an advantage when they find a jar of food. Then the advantage easily becomes a nightmare.
We are doing our rounds for the latest neutering campaign when we spot an odd-looking kitten on the outskirts of a village.
The kitten has a deadly ‘decoration’ around its neck: the mouth of a glass jar. Obviously, the remnants of a meal gone wrong.
Whether by accident or by the kitty’s will, the actual jar had broken, allowing the animal to continue to feed and more importantly – breathe. We have got to help and quickly anaesthetize the cat after bringing it to the clinic.
The animal is young and still growing. It was a matter of time before the glass turned into a suffocating ‘necklace’ that would have caused the cat to die a horrible death.
We manage to get it off without traumatizing the kitty – an example how simple help at a crucial moment could mean the difference between life and death. We are so grateful to have been on the ground today and to have given the sweet youngster his chance for life.
